ALCOLOCK V3 inhibits vehicle operation if the driver has been drinking. Engineered to withstand the vibration, dirt, dust, humidity and extreme temperatures, it can be installed in any motorized equipment, including trucks, ships, trains and heavy machinery.
Drivers use the handset to provide a breath sample. Within seconds ALCOLOCK V3 analyses it for breath alcohol content (BrAC) and displays instructions to the driver
Drivers may be tested at the beginning of their shift or at intervals throughout the day by programming the ALCOLOCK V3 system to meet company safety policy requirements.
ALCOLOCK V3 devices include an electronic override for emergency situations. Its use may be monitored using the system software.

In Nigeria, distracted driving and driving under the influence of any substance has become a significant contributor to road traffic incidents that result to serious injuries, fatality, and damage to property. Our decision to introduce Alcolock V3LE system is to provide the public and private sector with a solution to prohibit and deter drivers from operating any vehicle under the influence of substances like drugs and alcohol which can impair a driver’s ability to operate the vehicle safely.
The Federal Road Safety Commission of Nigeria stated that 90 percent of road traffic incidents are caused by the consumption of alcohol and hard drugs among commercial and private drivers. The consumption of alcohol by commercial and workplace drivers is usually done on the job. The impairment of alcohol and drugs can last for an extended period.
There are legislations such as The Federal Highways Traffic Act, Federal Road Safety Commission Act and Nigerian Highway Code, which contain mandates that prohibit the operation of any vehicle under the influence of any alcohol and substance. Unfortunately, these legislations are not complied with by drivers, thus the high number of road traffic incidents associated with impaired driving.
SHEM Consulting Limited is a company that provides services in Health Safety and Environmental Management. Our team of health and safety professionals are committed to provide quality service to meet the needs of our clients. Our decision to partner with Alcohol Countermeasure System Group (ACS) is to provide and distribute their alcohol interlock technology system Alcolock V3LE in Nigeria.
In 1970 ACS began as a research division of Borg-Warner with the mandate to develop technology that would prevent the operation of a vehicle by a drunk driver. The company was successful with its invention which became known as the breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID or IID).
Our focus is to ensure that employers and business owners understand the benefits of a safety, health, and environmental management. That they take reasonable and practicable steps to create and maintain a safe conducive work environment. We consistently engage and interact with our clients to deliberate and discuss their health and safety concerns and proffer solutions based on legislative and regulatory requirements and standards.
Driving is important for the delivery of goods and services. Organizations that employ a person to operate any mobile vehicle to deliver services should consider the vehicle a workplace and the act of driving as work. The safety of occupants of the vehicle and other road users should be paramount and consistent.
The development and design of Alcolock V3LE compiles with different international design and quality standards. This product serves as a control measure and deterrent to prevent any vehicle from being operational if the driver of the vehicle is under the influence of alcohol and other prohibited substances like drugs.
It is particularly important that the driver of a vehicle does not allow another person to blow into the IID if they have consumed any alcohol that exceeds the legal programmed limit. The primary focus of the IID is to prevent the operation of the vehicle if the driver has consumed any alcohol or prohibited substances that can impair their ability to drive safely. The technology used for IID’s are advanced and can easily detect if another person provides a breath sample into the device. Asking someone else to blow on the driver’s behalf is a failure and non-compliance subject to enforcement protocols.
There maybe situations where drivers required to operate a vehicle with an IID may not be able to provide multiple breath samples due to a medical condition that can affect their ability to blow for the duration required to provide a sample. In such situation a qualified medical professional will determine and recommend that such driver be exempt from the program.
The repair and maintenance of a vehicle with an IID is a unique situation that requires the attention of the Alcolock technician. However, the repair technician can disengage the battery in the vehicle which will disengage the IID. Having to start the vehicle multiple times during maintenance may come with some challenges since it requires the driver for whom the device was calibrated to provide the breath sample for the car to start.
